In 18 years I have never been spot checked!

And if your not employing anyone you can get away with a lot more.

The question was "for a tree surgeon to trade". A chainsaw and a pole saw and call yourself a tree surgoen, off you go. Nothing illegal about that. I know lots of "tree surgoens" that don't own any climbing kit.

Thats a good one. Yes, thats what I was getting at, there are plenty of them around. I spoke to one once that had an ad in YP that said "fully insured". I asked him about this and he said that his vehicle is fully insured! No crime there.

In the 4 years or so that ive been involved in treework ive never seen anyone from H andS,but just recently theve decended on alot of the guys doing utility work in our area seems they werent properly ticketed, one guy was saying theyve had 3 visits in the past month,so beware they are about, make sure you have all your bits of paper cause thats all they care about, not wether you can do the job safely or not.

Probably. Its up to the client to ask for insurance docs. YP ads are not declarations of truth are they? You only need to talk to a YP sales rep to know that.

I'm not condoning it of course!

But if it got to court then there must have been an accident, so he would be made to pay damages, but not prosecuted for a misleading YP ad.
