Easter Good Deed

My wife and I were walking near Carperby in Wensleydale today and found a bird of prey with a damaged wing near some old lead workings. We didn't know what it was, not a buzzard or peregrine. I carried it wrapped in my fleece and walked the 1 1/2 miles back to the car. Then we drove 16 miles to Thorp Perrow Arboretum near Bedale, where there is a Falconry Centre. The owner got one of the falconry staff to come from home, as it was 7.30pm by now, he identified it - an osprey! It had a Natural History Museum London tag on one of its legs. The falconer said they get lots of people bringing buzzards and other birds but not ospreys. They took our contact details, I hope it survives as they migrate from Africa. I don't know what damaged its wing. Maybe some FlaminG Character shot it:thumbdown: It was pure chance we found it, as we had gone to look at these old mine workings a few hundred yards from the footpath.

I'm going to ring tomorrow to see how it is doing. At least its got a better chance there than on that moorside. It was weak when we picked it up, so it must have been there a while. I doubt it would have let me near it if it had any strength left, never mind carry it in the crook of my arm so far, then put it in a car.
