Mines got the 2.5 engine, no problems with gearbox so far '145k' althoug I did need to sort the engine out shortly after buying it (cracked head bodged up by previous owner).

They're essentially the same as the Nissan Primastar I think, not sure on the engine and gearbox though ?

I really like the look of the Nissan variant, dependant on the running gear o course..

my 2 penny worth,

over the years between my firm and the old mans, we have had just about every vehicle going.

i have settled now for the transporter, (currently got 5 on the road) very few problems, drive nice, best fuel economy etc.

dont want to knock things like the disco (i loved mine)nbut as an all rounder its got to be transporter

To be honest I haven't read through the thread but from what ur looking at I would get the vw carravelle my old mans dealt in them fir 25 years bullet proof kids won't destroy them, great engines 35mpg from my last one and as the new model has just been realeased The used ones and pre registered have alot of money off! If ur interested in ones with wheel chair accessable lifts fitted then we have some good ones instock,

If not phone gilders van centre in Sheffield the have a great load of used stock from their ex rental fleet, I have driven the others you are looking at and all have their good points but the caravelle/transporter is a good all rounder,

hope this helps pm me if u want sone brouchurs on the carravelle range as we stock them, try Wheel chair accessible vehicle conversion specialists - Invatravel Conversions Ltd - Homepage that's the old mans place
