Hi Hamadryad 'et al', apologies I haven't read the above posts in detail as I'm a bit 'under the cosh' at the moment but here's a few thoughts (not sure they'll meet Rupe's definition of controversial(?) tho...bl**dy boffin!)

 

- MEWPs 'v' climber is a good one already mentioned

- Work positioning requirement for 2 'load bearing' anchor points, i.e. W@H Regs. (still not fully resolved although most don't!)

- Refresher/update training and requirement to updates old NPTC units 20,21 & 22, i.e. 'yes', refsreer training is required BUT 'new(er)' NPTCs???

- Climbing helmets...do we really need them?

- Manual Handling assessments (already mentioned) are they appropriate for our industry

- a little unrelated but 'waste carriers licence'...should we have to have them?

The mewp v climber would be good as I can see that one causing more problems as time goes on ie the HSE will push it more and more imo.

 

It could also mean the end of the top handle too!

Climbing helmets? Yes of course we do.

 

 

I would say, chainsaw boots in the tree!!! Why the heck? What statistics are there for climbers cutting there feet!! I climbed in my scarpas today deadwooding a nice big beech, and I feel way safer and more in control climbing in decent boots than any chainsaw boots I've ever worn. I can get far better work positioning, and isn't work positioning supposed to be the whole point??

 

I'd be happy using an ms200T with non chainsaw boots all day long. Bigger saws, well? I'd be happy, trainees/employees maybe not. Maybe there should be two "chainsaw from a rope and harness" tickets??

Ive seen quite allot of people with nicked CS boots TBH, admitedly not many through to the protection but still close enough for my liking. Modern boots are plenty light & breathable, never really bothered me.

How many of those nicks that you've seen (that weren't through to the protection) were done "in the tree". What statistics and numbers do you have?

I'll confess to being guilty a couple of times in hitting the steel toe cap but thats from just being lazy, if I was wearing a pair of hiking boots then I wouldnt have gone there.
