I had to move my (road registered and street-legal) 1961 Iron Fairy yard crane a short distance along the A361 over the weekend. 12 mph flat out, no suspension, and rear-wheel steering.

 

At one point I pulled over to let a slow moving bus overtake. A new experience for me!

The bit about the police escort is out of date........

 

Dibble hasn't done escorts for quite a while now, you either do your own or get an outside contractor in.

 

The Highways Agency has a code of practice in place

 

And what about the 30mph minimum on the Mway??

 

I was told your vehicle had to be capable of 25mph on the flat, but obviously it would be slower on hills.

I don’t know what the minimum limit is but I imagine on a minor road it can be as slow as you want, on a motorway would probably be a different matter

 

Special types Low loaders are pretty slow, anything much over 30 and you risk blowing tyres out but they get escorts and go off peak because of the low speed they are obliged to travel at.

 

If you were impeding the flow of traffic and in danger of causing an accident simply because your lame ass vehicle couldn’t muster sufficient speed under its own power I am sure you would be asked to re consider your strategy.

Just done a lot of googling cant find any definitive but it seems that there is no minimum speed limit for motorways but if you are causing an obstruction you may get stopped by the police.

No minimum speed limit on A or B roads, 25mph on the M way.

On the M way - over 75 tonnes or 9'6'' wide or 55' long you need an escort.

Then the more weight over that you carry the more people you have to notify. Eg over 150 tonnes you have to inform water, electric and gas that you are carrying that amount of weight.
