cornish trees to see?

Recommended Posts

off to cornwall this summer, going to see Eden project for the first time, but staying near nequay, does anyone know of any worthwhile trees or forests to see while out that way?

Hi,

Tregreharn near Par sounds interesting, I,ve not been but my chrissy prez, New Trees, seems to suggest lots of exotics and oddities, If not you can always get pissed in Polruan.

Cheers.

Lanhydrock, a National Trust estate near Bodmin, has some nice parkland and woodland gardens. Bocconoc, near Lostwithiel, is a large estate and deer park with some nice veteran Oaks and Beech, a large %age of which is SSSI.

For a real Cornish speciality, get up to Dizzard in N.E Cornwall, an excellent and rare example of a stunted Sessile Oak wood that's been 'bonsai'ed' by the Atlantic gales - you'll feel like Gulliver.

Any of the flooded river valley woods are nice, Lantyan is a nice Woodland Trust reserve near Golant on the River Fowey. The Fal estuary is also worth a visit, as has already been mentioned.

Cabilla, near Bodmin, Golitha, near Draynes, and Respryn are all nice mixed broadleaf woodlands on the Fowey.

I'm sure I've forgotten loads, but that lot should keep you busy.:001_smile:

Park house. National trust centre of operations for Dartmoor. Drive up the main entrance huge Sessile Oak just before cattle grid and entrance to the car park :o BEAST!

There are some fine conifers in Cardinham woods which is close to Lanhydrock if you go there. In the car park there is also quite a large Oak. Had a very large limb taken off and is quite one sided. Great fun to climb though!

To all the reccie climb proposals, Im up for these anywhere anytime as long as I havent a pile of work or coursework to plough through!

To the BEAST sessile oak, THATS "my cup o tea!"

Never been fussed about "exotics" Im a lover of natives and some arguable natives! if there are MONSTER old oaks antwhere i am well in, or beech for that matter

Yeah we can find some monsters dotted around. Cornwall isnt known for its real biggies, but there are a few......the pic in my avatar was taken at about 135 feet, albeit on above mentioned sitka, but i think that qualifies as fairly big!
