BS3998 Step cuts

With out going into too much detail I recently sat an exam paper where there was a question which asked to describe an inboard, outboard and in line step cut and why they are used. I have complained about this because it was not in the knowledge requirements of the unit. The exam board told me I would be able to get this from BS3998 . I have looked and can't see any mention of step cuts in BS3998.

If i remember correctley there is a good discription of in/out board cut in the NPTC guidelines for CS units 40 or 41, and when to use which.

I've never read any thing about step cuts, but the way I understand and use them is,

 

out board is when the top cut is further from the tree than the under cut and makes the branch drop fairly flat.

 

in board is when the top cut is nearer the tree than the under cut and tends to make the branch drop more tip first.

 

in line is just when you line up the top and under cut and I would only really use it on small stuff or big lumps that have already had the weight taken off the end.

I always thought BS3998 was about how you finished your pruning cuts and what you removed, not the process of removing the unwanted branches, but I could be wrong.

There's no mention of step cuts in the current BS3998 booklet, only a diagram and small explanation of the pruning cut, i.e. branch collar etc. Have you got your CS 39 ticket? I think the different cuts are explained to you then, they certainly were when I did mine.

 

No I have not done my CS39, they told me step cuts were explained in BS3889 which is my argument. Just wanted a few peoples opinions before I make an official complaint.

Cheers for that Mick thought thats where I would find it. But those booklets are not in our course material. My argument is just you should only be asked questions on stuff not in the course material. Sorry wont be able to make it on Sunday got my CS32 assessment on Saturday and better spend some time with the wife at the weekend.
