Anyone on here got any experience of applying for an operators licence? I would like to add a 7.5 tonner to my fleet, but would need to keep it at home. Can an operating centre for an hgv be in a residential area - or do you need an industrial type place to keep it? Any advice would be welcome:icon14:

I worked as hgv mechanic for a small firm and hold vosa hgv inspections and proceedures.

your operating centre ie where you work from cannot be domestic premises

you need a garage with pit/ramps and suitably qualified person to do inspections. or written contract with hgv garage to do it for you. including service plan set out for the year.

inspections intervals are based on use long haul/motorway may be twelve weeks tipper work six or even four weeks.

you may also have to take certificate of proffesional competence(I don,t know if it has come in yet)

the best place to find out is your area traffic commisioners office as they deal with operators licencing

I have my 7.5 tonne Merc registered with VOSA as a dual purpose vehicle as it is fitted with a tow bar for towing trailers, horse boxes, etc. Added advantage exempt from tacho regulations and no operators licence requirements.

A top man from VOSA told me you can register a vehicle as to whatever you want, but you get a VOSA road side check and the inspector thinks you're taking the pee, you'll be up before a magistrate!!

All this rubbish about ag registered etc is all a load of BS and thats from the horses mouth, the head area inspector!

Dual purpose vehicle!! haha thats a new one to me lol I hope you've got a good excuse or a HGV if your towing over 750kg and if your 7.5 toner is out working you better have and ''O'' licence..

It makes me laugh with some on here, always trying to dodge the law! if your gonna break the break it! don't beat about the bush!
