Thats a VERY good point, oak also having a resistant and durable "heartwood, as aposed to ripewood in old beeches.

I am a fan of a nice big oak everytime! but that oak in the picture is a corker!

Huge fan of both these mighty species but after visiting burnham beeches the other week i have a whole new respect for beech!!

oak every time, beech is a non native species and it suppresses the woodland flora too much, in my humble opinion

 

There is some debate, but Beech is still considered a native in most books.

I do love the new foliage on a beech, when it first comes out it looks like it would be great in a salad. I'm sure its rank however.

I think lime leaves are the prefered early salad leaf? and will try beech and reply in a few weeks! interesting point too.

its not a native tree in scotland tom

 

alder ash aspen bird cherry crack willow downy birch gean goat willow hazel hawthorn holly juniper rowan scots pine silver birch sessile oak wych elm and yew

 

anyway the only thing u find up a beech is squirrels and crow nests...biodiversity wise it comes a poor second to the oak

Yeah, I had an "iffy moment" when i found that image yesterday!

 

I dont half miss him, this house is just a hollow shell without him.

 

However got some more images today and in reply to the lack of biodiversity surrounding the mighty beech I am going to have root through my archives and dispel this tosh!

just going by looks, i like a big fat oak tree, or a avenue of tall smooth beeches
