what part of the country are you gary, most forestry contractors would prefer to operate their own kit, dont think many will hire out their machines - ask your local contractor for a price - as there will be alot of things to take into consideration before you could say a ball park price - best to get someone in to take a look

I doubt very much if you would get a forwarder in for just 50t, wouldnt be worthwhile for any contractor unless their machine was in the next compartment or just along the road or something.

Tractor and forwarding trailer would be your best bet - can't comment on rates too much but most likley you'd pay around the £7/t mark for extraction or the contractor might want a day rate for such a small tonnage.

Best to get a local contractor in, machine hire would be expensive and bare in mind if you opt for a forwarder it will need delivered on a low loader, and can only take stuff to roadside for you where you'll need to organise haulage etc.

Is it hardwood or softwood??

its a mix of the 2 was just thinkikng small forwader as the hilly site the tractor would be grounding all th time

If you can find a contractor with a tractor, you could see about finding someone with a set of double drum winches on the back for skidding...

Anywhere the tractor can't get to, to load the timber, it can skid extract until it can load it up.

Honestly, for 50t you just won't get a forwarder to look at it... and then even if you paid all that expense, would th etimber be worth it?

if it's all prime softwood sawlogs it's only worth about £1500, if it's all hardwood lengths for firewood it's still only worth £2k..

If it's a private job, or your own wood etc - why not look at getting some kind of forwarding trailer behind a quad and hand load it, for the sake of 50t you could save yourself alot of money.

Failing all that just get a local contractor to come and have a look at the job, they will tell you exactly what can and can't be done and how to go about it.
