Grandmother tree

This tree was until recently the only one in existance, Its the Dirleton Red apple.

It lives on the edge of the vilage green in Dirleton, East Lothian, this is the second time we have pruned it, just a light lift and thin.

It has amazing deep pink blossom which it has in abundance, redish leaves and red fruit, there is even a red tint in the wood. It is beleived to be related to Malus pumila var niedzwetzkyana. A nursery has recently grafted some and they are now available for sale, but this is the grandmother of them all.

We were pretty subtle with our crown lift and thin.:001_smile:

Here's a couple of pics of her in bloom, pretty impressive. the fruit is fairly small and sour MD its a crab type apple. Although I made some crab apple vodka this year from some wild trees down the road, its not bad.:thumbup1:
