Would it harm to start making a ditch on the field side? Cast up from that side only.

I suppose you could, I probably am not going to especially as the ditch will collect the water and then concentrate it down the slope possibly increasing erosion rather than run off the edge in a more random fashion.

Right you are. Next hedge please.

If time and money were no worries then bank I am working on actually has a wall down to the road. Would take some time but it would be great to reinstate it but alas I am both short on time and money, and ultimately it is a tenanted farm, so would be foolish to put my time and effort into a vanity project such as that when I have more blackthorn to tango with..

I apologise,  I  blew the photo up and what I thought was strong was a thin branch on a loop with the sun shining on it

But I couldn't see any crooks !

Not one, despite being in Exmoor national park. Luckily predominantly hazel on this stretch, but then have bramble and Blackthorn on the next one.

Looks good you can’t beat a hazel hedge

I have used one or two crooks but mostly I have laid quite a few stems and intertwined branches to stop it moving.

I am on a bit of hedge laying at the moment, only a few hundred meters to do, couple of fences grown in as well for good measures, nice and rusty, perfectly camouflaged, to take the edge of your saw!

I feel your pain! I've sharpened my way through a brand new chain in a day. This stretch under the oaks had 4 fences in various states of decay and an almighty amount of blackthorn tangled up in it all.

Those brash piles are pretty much all blackthorn from that 30m, tried to retain and lay all the hazel. It's a bit thin under the two oaks.

Not in Devon but west Wales, not really sure of the finer details of the Carmarthenshire style but this is what I'm up to.

Nice work and a nice office!

In places that looks very Devon style, your welsh styles tend to be higher and thicker than the Devon.

In devon on a bank, the hedge is laid to enhance the bank, the bank being the main stock proof part.

I got a pretty thick bit of Blackthorn in the next hedge. That will be a job for the 2.6t and a tree sheer. Those thorns are awfully tenacious and near impossible to pull out when grown together, flailed and then left to go again.

Used the winch on my chipper to have a out several Holly trees in my hazel section.
