I don't believe that it's about assimilation. On the push side it's just the age old pursuit of wealth and power, but happening at an unprecedented speed. On the pull side it's the human love of convenience and novelty.

 

Digital per se isn't the problem. It'd be fine if it was used wisely and altruistically.
