I wonder if the shoots, when long enough, could be not-exactly woven together to form a living carpet, adding another layer of separation from the bog.

Ah that would be our Teppichhedging ™ An interesting idea - especially for decorative walkways but it would be very high-maintenance: every shoot would be forever throwing up new spring growth. Does sound like a good experiment though.
