I wonder if the shoots, when long enough, could be not-exactly woven together to form a living carpet, adding another layer of separation from the bog.

Ah that would be our Teppichhedging ™ An interesting idea - especially for decorative walkways but it would be very high-maintenance: every shoot would be forever throwing up new spring growth. Does sound like a good experiment though.

Quick Update: coupla pics from earlier this month. ETA a bit of detail: this is pretty much the same spot as shown on the earlier pics: all those initial shoots sprouted and grew and were 4-6ft high in these pics. Mine had a shoot or two, probably grazed by chickens. It’s been dry too. Will throw some wire on it.

Somone told me about willows ability to sprout from a stick in the dirt. I took a small fresh branch and planted. It turned black and died.

When this thread as started in April I took some cuttings - similar idea to you, put in a bucket of water for 6 weeks or so till they sprouted decent roots and planted out - most are still going strong but they have a lot of summer competition (brambles, weeds, grasses...). Expecting them to be about 1m tall next summer.

You are all mad I tell you mad!

You are creating a forest of willow that will never die and will laugh at you!

This is the kind of thing that you do to enemies not yourself.
