Hi I am a novice saw owner I was looking to replace a stolen ms 170  and saw 2 ms 440s in a auction a barn find supposedly both were seized when I got them home Im a pensioner with time on my hands so had ago at fixing them the piston looks like something has gone in from the carb side and a bit was fouling the crank the pot looked OK so ordered a piston and gasket they were 50 ml checked the duff one it was 46 ml the only badge on it is on the clutch cover ms 440 made in germany  only 46 ml pistons I found were for ms290 and ms340 all good experience but will it ever live again

What ever you do , if you fix it make sure you determine the reason for the seizure ( air leak , bad fuel mix etc etc ) because if you don't sort that it will quickly happen again .

here are a few photos looks like one of the washers on the wristpin has failed .I would try some chinese bits to try and get it going but 46ml pistons have 10ml pins the one on this is 12ml swapping the bottom end may be beyond me and if I do its never going to be stihl on the plus side 340 gasket fits case and pot

That is a Chinese rip off jobbie .  Google Stihl MS 440 images . I would not waste any time or money on that matey .

As Stubby said, one of these in working condition is only worth around £50. Just chuck it in and see if you have any comeback on the source you got it from as it is fake junk and has never seen Germany.

As above, dont spend anymore time or money on those machines.

Its worth going back to the auction site if they were selling those machines as Stihl MS440's
