I’ve done tree thinning in Sweden—first, second, and third cuts to give the best trees room to grow strong and fast. Seems like it’s not a big thing in Scotland, though. Wondering why—too much wind knocking them over, or just more into clear-felling here?

In Sweden it's done for Tall and Gran,  or scottish pine and spruce,   the hardwood trees is great for wet areas to keep.   or for a frost protection for the ones getting kept and taken away in second thinning.

You will find thinning on a lot of FC sites and private estates. Line thinning, first and second then whatever after. Lots of hardwood and softwood mixed when planting to draw up the hardwood

Too wet and high up , too much money and it’s pretty easy to attain c16 grade timber for building on say a 40 year rotation without thinning in a stand … any of the sites I’ve seen in keilder  that they thin for continuous cover always seem to blow , these areas are I’m guessing ran by people who’s primary interest is wildlife and recreation and think they are doing the right thing and not realising the reason why they have never been thinned in the first place is because they just blow on the wet peaty soil… the damage is usually so bad it ends up clear fell anyway.
