Struggling to think of a place where a locked maillon wouldn't be superior, unless you've got 4 or more simultaneous directions of pull... given oval and triangular maillons. 

 

Replaceable ring on a sewn loop or spliced eye for a cambium saver... removable bridge ring?

I don't think the "permanent" attachment should be emphasised, the spring pin is very easy to open with any thin-nosed bit of metal, some people could probably open it with a particularly gnarly and unbitten thumbnail (so not me). And the spring pin is captive, unlike the removable screw on the aluminium green or black version, so I'd be happy to open it up a tree...

TBH I’m not going to knock it as my knowledge of modern climbing stuff is limited.

 

What if we had a local farrier knock one together out of cast iron, would you be interested then?

Skinnier than my pinky, 49kN... didn't get a photo, but there was another one only slightly fatter, say an index finger, 100kN...
