Soft wood is very wide term it is possible to damage blades in 3 sec , mulching a little brush with some garden ornaments unnoticed, or accidentally put secateurs in it and so on , so your question is. ….. well questionable. It is few nicks  I think everything is ok, light touch with grinder and it’s ready for work.

A shredder works very differently from a chipper. Typically, and it is a generality, stuff you put in a chipper ain't for a shredder and stuff for a shredder don't go well in a chipper! Those blades are 'scuffed' about but they will still shredder stuff up,

Looks as if it ate something it shouldn't or as there are nicks and dents in chamber missing, there was problem with the shape/seat of the knife holders or the screws where overtightend or a bad batch of knives with hardening defects.
