Consider checking the chain drive sprocket before doing any intensive investigation work. It may well be possible it has worn so badly that the underside chain drive links have cut a slot in the sprocket teeth, so under no load condition the chain will rotate, but as soon as a load is applied the chain drive links just slip through the wear slots cut in the sprocket teeth.

I've seen a couple of bad ones and a few rim sprockets that have split in half but I've never seen a spur sprocket that bad!

I haven't seen it yet but ms260 apparently hasn't been used for a while and just tried using it again.  Engine runs fine and revs up but when you start cutting even quite small stuff the chain is slowing/stopping even when on full revs?

Any ideas, anything obvious I should look for?

Sounds like clutch issue to me?  But why would it just start suddenly?  Any ideas/fixes much appreciated.

I'll try and look at it later today or tomorrow.

Any luck in sourcing the problem? Ive seen a couple of MS 201's where the spur has came loose from the drum.

Would strongly recommend you change the spur sprocket for a rim setup.

Reminds me of that film . ..." you strongly object " ?   A few Good Men . 🙂

Sorry for delay replying, been busy couple of weeks and hadn't chance to reply.

Thanks all, good to know...

However...

Fair bit of misinformation on this one.  Despite being told the engine is running fine, it's not!  It's the engine bogging down when cutting not the chain/clutch slipping!

I recognised the saw last time I saw it was 18months ago I put a new carb on it.  Gave the carb a quick strip down and clean but looked pretty good.

Air filter completely blocked so sorted that.

Pulled the fuel filter out to check and the hose fell apart, must have been really perished.  Waiting on new one.

I'm hoping once it's back together it's just the idle screw needs adjusting?

So thanks for the ideas, I'll store them in the back of the brain sure I'll need them one
