GOD HELP ME

Hi guys

so this is a bit random… started doing a bit of gardening here and there for elderly neighbours. Quite enjoy it as an extra little earned so looked into being official.

A bit of research suggested I need 2 legislative to run legitimately. PA1 PA6 as well as a green waste certificate from council and obviously liability

so looking into local centres that offer this training and found one by me and rang to enquire… lady said I may be in lucky because uk forestry have just opened up grants to help people like myself. Great! Had a look into it and asked myself why get a grant for £300 course when I can get a grant for £3000 course. So I endeavoured to apply for arboriculturist  training.

so in a few weeks I’ll be completing cs30 cs31 (Chainsaw Maintenance & Cross Cutting + Felling Small Trees up to 380mm) and then cs38 and cs 39 (Level 3 Award in Aerial Cutting of Trees with a Chainsaw Using Free-fall Techniques) courses

I do have to supply the following from this list if anyone can  help it would me much appreciated:

I don’t really want to scrimp because I will be doing this professionally too

thank you so much in advance 🙏

God help the training provider if your first two courses are to be small fell and aerial cutting!

I don't think it's possible to complete an aerial cutting course unless you already hold the climbing and aerial rescue tickets.

Also, I'd be hoping the provider would have provision for the equipment needed on the course.

Did you want a round of applause ?.

It just sounds like you don't know if you want to be a gardener, tree surgeon, brash dragger, climber or sprayer of weedkiller.

excuse me? What’s it to you what I want to be. Why are you being so rude?  If I wanna do this for the sheer fun of it then surely that’s my prerogative

the mind boggles at how every corner of the internet are full of brain dead trolls just sitting there waiting to project their crap onto someone innocently asking advice. Don’t know why I bother

Are you looking for someone to sell you your list second hand, either in part or in full? And are you an absolute beginner?

You are looking well into four figures to get your whole list, and for bits of it you should really try out different options before deciding on something.

If you are a beginner beginner, like I was when I did my first training, I'd expect the course provider to not only give you most of what you need - certainly saws and climbing kit, maybe not personally PPE - but also have some of the different gear available to experiment with, so you can actually see what's out there before buying something you hate.

IMG_2593.thumb.jpeg.da4bbf0c4f5010f7a4f9287c8a9a0007.jpegSo this is an occupation based training centre not a college so generally they expect their trainees to have the necessary equipment to then be able to go on to use it professionally

i have just spoke on the phone again to them to clarify a few things. The courses were booked in to be back to back but from what I have read they are quite mentally demanding and a lot to learn so she said she’s happy to reschedule the cs 38 / cs 39 to early next year.

this will allow me to take in everything I learn from the beginner chainsaw and ground felling course and use it whilst working for my friend to gain more and more experience and then early next year should be recharged and ready for the more technical aerial work

so for now I will only need to get the small list of items

I do need to purchase a new chainsaw though suitable for an absolute beginner. I was looking at the husqvarna 550 xp mark 2 15" but would this be too powerful and heavy to start with?

the training centre recommended the stihl 211 but I feel that this might be at the opposite end of the spectrum? I’m going to have to pass a practical assessment so it is important I’m not hindered by the equipment I use

A 550 mk 2 will see you right for most things you can expect to do for a while.

Get a climbing helmet from the get go, don't bother with a ground lid. Some people get stroppy about wearing a chin strap when they are on the ground, don't be a whiny little bitch like them. Just fasten the damn chin strap.

Try and pick up a few bits of climbing gear from now until then along the way, and start practicing knots.
