How to Sweep Wood Burning Cook Stove?

Recommended Posts

My chimney sweep came over yesterday but was perplexed by our wood burning cook stove. It’s a La Nordica Rosa (Large)

with a solid stove pipe from the top of the cooker up to the flue. My sweep said he’d rather pass than get into trying to dismantle it, and that he had expected there to be an inspection valve on the stovepipe. Does anyone have any experience with La Nordica range cookers? Most seem to have the same uninterrupted stove pipe.

I have a Nordica range cooker and yes there should be an access point in the flue.

Something like in the pic below.

The screw comes out to remove the round plate so you can get your brushes up. I don't think you are going to access it any other way unless you go on the roof and push the brushes down.

The soot will fall down the back of the oven box and to clear it you have to remove the plate that you can see under the oven when the door is open. Remove the two Allen bolts and the plate comes off, you then rake the soot out.

Take the rings off the hob and give everything a damned good clean from in there too and if it has been swept there will be a build up behind the flap that the oven/water control operates. Don't forget to clean the ash off the water pipes in the firebox and on top of the oven while the rings are off. Good idea to do that more often than you get your chimney swept as it makes a big difference to how the fire and oven work.

Very good stoves, this is my second (moved house) and my heating, DHW and cooking rely on the stove.

Just had a look at the users manual online, not a lot in there about sweeping the flu - so I'd assume it should be reasonably obvious.

If the sweep cannot find how to send the brushes up the chimney then maybe they should try going downwards - and then it will be obvious where the soot is coming out and gives a clue where to brush from next time?  If you are getting is swept I'll be guessing you are giving it a good clean anyway so perhaps have a good look to see if there is anything obvious.

In the manual there appears to be options for a right angle bend in the flu behind the stove or a straight flu out the top of it, which way around is yours? A straight flue / chimney should be OK to sweep from the top, a right angle bend should have some sort of access to stop if blocking at that point

Usually it's very difficult to sweep a woodburning cooker from inside the appliance.

A sweeping access hatch needs to be incorporated above the appliance.  It is a legal requirement to build in sweeping facilities, usually this is through the appliance but cookers are different.

Assuming this appliance has flue ways around the oven these will also need to be cleaned along with the underside of the hotplate.    Hopefully the manufacturer instruction will show you how this is achieved,  if not talk to the company you bought it from.

This is where using your local dealer shows its worth. .

It looks like you can get a pick under the hot plates to remove them.  This might help you manouvre brushes from below in the firebox and then up the flue. Sorry I don't have one but this is what I'd try.  Just try and disassemble as much as you can - take your time and video it to help reassembly.  That said I would want an access hatch to the chimney.
