Anyone had any experience of growing shiitake mushrooms on hardwood logs  other than oak ?
I have 100 impregnated dowels to implant , but don’t have any oak trees to harvest any suitable 2-3’ long logs.

Was wondering about trying field maple ?

bazinga!

That's a shitake joke...

As for the question, I've only grown shiitake on fresh oak, the dowels should keep for a few weeks a fridge if you're likely to get some oak in a few weeks.

Out of curiosity, I had a bit of a search and found a US paper that says sycamore and sugar maple can be successful. So might be worth a go on field maple. Birch and beech also seem worth a go.

I've got some plugs but never got round to planting them, if I recall my instructions said any hardwoods but 2 weeks after felling, no fungus already in the wood, not too thin or too thick. I had some cherry and apple lined up but they'll be too dry now.
