After opinions , I have a load of large over sized timber and am looking at splitting it down in to billets to go through a processor and for biomass boiler fuel.

what would be the minimum size excavator and what are decent cones.

thanks in advance.

Lasco splitter, 2.7 ton digger.  It doesn’t break up lengths pretty but will break down stuff you don’t want to put a saw near, like  ugly beech with rot and metal.
If you not needing a mini digger then look out for a Back hoe, 3cx or similar.  Lot more metal for your money. And handy for your place and jobs.

I’ve been amazed what my auger mounted cone splitter on my e27 will split.

id forget feeding it through a processor afterwards though. Just doesn’t work. You have very little control

over how it splits. Look at a big horizontal splitter instead.

Any pictures? Often wondered about getting one on my auger too.

To be honest most of it would be for biomass boiler in 1 m lengths but I have a load of relatively straight ash I was going to mill but thought would be ok for processing if it was in billets as I’m about two loads short.

I was thinking today  maybe the splitter could be mounted the valtras loader.

A splitter on a loader sounds awkward and frustrating to me. Sure it can be done to a degree but the digger will have alot more finesse

Forget the loader Matty, you have to constantly move the pressure to manipulate the screw into the weak spots and see what you are doing.  Plus you need to look after the nose of the cone so you don’t damage it in dirt or concrete depending where you are working.
