13mm ropes

Are you guys only able to use 13mm or 1/5 inch ropes for climbing?

No mate, The diversity of rope diameter available is pretty big, or at least bigger than you would think, as the boundaries are seperated by 2mm. it is usually between 11.1-13mm.

 

Have a butchers on sites like this, Not the biggest collection but enough to get an idea.

10mm is the minimum but most climb on either 11-11.5 or 13mm why do you ask?

i use 13mm as i find the thinner to hard to hold and makes my hands sore

When the lifeline is under tension while beoing knicked by the saw (handsaw or chainsaw), there honestly isn't much difference between 11mm and 13mm rope. They both snap easily. So I don't think safety comes into it at all.

 

Where 11mm and 13mm differ is:

 

1. Ease of handling (larger diameter is easier to pull)

2. Weight and volume.

Im thinking about getting another 13mm rope after switching mostly to 11mm ,decided they are a complete waste of time in the wet on greasey trees(apart from the last two days,thats all the time!)only 13 mm rope i have left is scorch i really like it but mine has no spliced eye so is a pain with the rope guide.

ive been thinking the same thing mate, been contemplating getting anew hank of arbormaster. i do have some but it hasnt got a splice(since another climber cut it off when we were both in the tree) and i dont really like climbing on knots(far to untidy)
