Adolescent Apple

My mate’s just inherited this at his new allotment. I don’t really know what to do with them at this age. What say we all?

Looks a bit like the previous owner was training for espalier (fan). I guess the first thing is decide whether they like to stick with that or do something different?

If you're not sure, why not leave it and see what - if any - apples it produces? That might help a decision.

RHS has some good pruning and training advice generally. I've got their pruning and training book and I usually dip into it to remind my old brain what I'm supposed to be doing.

 

I'd keep the tree like has been said and see what it doe this year. If it not already supported then it probably will need some when the heavy fruit is on.

Could still espalier, with some support wires between posts. Might be a good option for an allotment rather than a great big spreading tree taking up loads of space is what I was thinking.
