Hello! New guy from Finland here. 

 

If you want to try square filing without the correct file then a flat file with a rounded edge is your best bet. That type of file also works on semi chisel because of the rounded edge. It's just a bit harder to position the file on semi since you have no corner to aim at. In some parts of the world those files are called goofy files.

I’ve been experimenting a bit, lessening the angle of attack with good results. 
I’ll do some timing videos against a new chain when I get the chance.
