There is no way its road salt as road never gets salted. 

Will get more pictures tomorrow if I remember it so a big area woodland area has it right to back behind houses.

Possibly phytophthora? Especially if it has covered a decent sized area as the fungus moves in the wind for dispersal.

We are losing alot of Lawson's cypress to Phytophthora here in west Wales. They normally have the dark lesion on the bark.

Had a bit of a walk about and got more pictures, first picture is only a part of a shelter belt which is about 300m that is affected. There is no signs of dark lesions.

I was wrong saying Leylandi where affected they are not.
