How to proceed with old apple trees?

Question

I asked a tree surgeon to prune these old apple trees last winter, and a lot was taken off (much more than I expected). This is how they look now. I’m not sure what to do now in order to restore their shape? Really appreciate any advice. I am a complete novice, but love these old trees.

If you don't already have some decent suitable  tools and do decide to keep them pruned yourself , I recommend you consider getting some decent quality secateurs a  pruning saw and some bypass loppers then you will have all  the tools you need to maintain them.

Theese are  good quality brands

Okatsune secateurs

silky or samurai saws

bacho loppers

Trees look low enough now that no ladders needed..

That is so kind. The tree surgeon came back with a reasonable price to shape them so he is going to do it this year. But would love advice next year! Trees are in Sudbury.

I am between Haverhill and Clare so pass through Sudbury from time to time. I will let you know when I am heading that way.
