Where's Best for Hydraulics? And Which Ones?

Having seen a few home brews I'd quite like to have a crack at fabbing my own log splitter. The main priority is speed. Can lay my hands on most of the bits and bobs required, but I'd quite like to invest in some decent hydraulics, specifically a decent control valve and a pto pump. Any thoughts on the best options?

Quick is not necessarily the best. There is such a thing as too quick.

The fastest working (safe) systems have a two stage pump. The ram will move quickly when not under load but drops to about half the speed when it encounters resistance.

How fast your system operates will depend on the volume of the ram, the output of the pump and to a lesser extent the diameter of the pipe work and fittings. Go with 3/8 dia. as a minimum try Harrier fluid power on eBay.

Top info, thank you gents! I may come back with more Q's regarding exact spec as it takes shape.

Re the speed issue, some of the one's I've seen seem hellish slow, I really don't want to be stood there thinking 'I could do this quicker with me axe!'

I've toyed with the idea of building one of these

but I just haven't got the beard for it !

Thanks Again!

I recently replaced some (stolen) 1/2" hydraulics with 3/8" on my tipper / loader. The 3/8" kit was a fair bit cheaper and no slower, probably due to the pump not being big enough to use 1/2" fully. So if you decide to go 1/2" make sure that your pump has enough flow to make use of it.
