I think this was the problem, I removed the filter and made sure the fuel line was free did the air filter back up and checked fuel line was free and bingo. Now it runs like a dream! Thanks for all the help and suggestions, this easy fix has made my day!

Strange one, is the carb held on with two small nuts on the threaded rods as it should be? I didn't reckon it was this as it would either be clamped or not and the fitting of the air filter wouldn't change that: -

Yes thats right, I found i had to do the air filter up a little bit each side until tight to get it to sit tight on the carb.

Am I right in thinking the best/safest way to tune the carb is to use a tachometer to get the revs at the recommended rpm's and then the fuel air mix will be correct? 
Yes, there's a procedure in the manual to follow, with a tacho.
