Split log Size?

we had one woman who wanted a full load all cut to 6 inch for her rayburn, then she wanted them all stacked in her garage,

All our wood is cut to 4 feet in lenght (maximum lenght that the splitter will split) and split on the splitter. It is then stacked to dry. We then use a saw bench to cut to what ever the customer wants: 6 to 22 inch is the range that our customers want.

We just cut 10-12" if they want bigger we can happily do it on the splitter. If they want 6" logs I charge 20% more because lots more work loads more saw dust.

I have same method, but produce 36" billets. When cutting to size with bench saw it is easy to get 6", 9", 12" or 18" logs without any waste or odd sizes left over.

Only had one customer wanting 18" logs though - and he was really disappointed that I couldn't get all ash for him!

Thanks, I thought there might not be an exact science to it. I do love a neat stack though!

have some customers who want silly small sizes,,due to purchasing french log burners,,,so charge em more,,,,some big houses want monster logs,,so give them the narly horrible stuff(there always happy)and the rest,,same as everyone,,,7-9 inch,,,,loggers eye obviously,,,

I used the billet method last year its good if you dont have concrete covered hard standing. But I found it hard going standing 1m lenghts of 400mm trunks. we have a vertical splitter. This year Iplan to just ring it with a large electric saw from stihl mse 220 and split straight into log pile saves double handling. When its time to go out scoop with bobcat.

We to cut at 40".To get 8" for nets and small stoves.10" and 13 and a third inches.Sounds abit of a fiddle I Know but we cut all the dry wood on a Ballario and Forestello bandsaw.Electric ,very little waste.Any thing with abit of moisture is cut on a B & F elecric circular saw.And the bigger stuff is cut straight into 15" or 18" rings and split.Seems to work well for us.
