Sorry if this sounds daft but does anyone know what you could legally or more to the point sensibly tow, weight wise behind a John deere 2140.

no mate but i'll ask down the farm tomorrow for ya.fine line between legal and sensible.i spent the last 2 harvests towing an 18 ton trailer with probably 25 ton of beans in back and forth with a clapped out jd6910!!

i've got one of my mates staying tonight that is tech specialist for JD I will find out off him for you, although now its more to do with brake efficiency and if you have an accident its more likely the brakes rather than load will be looked into.

Thanks for the help so far. i have a small three tonne trailer behind the jd 2140 without brakes and when it weighs 2 tonne all up its scary on the brakes. It takes a split second for the brakes to do anything I think they are immersed in oil. There must be a point when you need hyd brakes on the trailer. I only ask as getting 8 wheelers to deliver is becoming impossible and the timber is only 6 miles up the road. I cant get an artic in my entrance:blushing:if you see what I mean.

you need weight to pull weight for stopping - all tractor manufacturers will only allow about 3t on the drawbar weight if an accident - so weigh your nose weight of your trailer on a public weighbridge,

brake wise i would fit brakes, i have always fitted brakes to all our trailers even our small 3t jobby, especiially if towing with a smaller tractor - now what you mean can be a hairy experience! best to be right gensetsteve for your own piece of mind.
