I often wonder am i making any money of firewood.

I just did a job big ash tree, really long trunk with a weird crown stuck on the top. i had quoted to remove the tree and then gave them a token of 50 quid for the wood. it too 2 hours to get the tree dismantled and down and the rest of the time discing up the butt and moving it to my yard. from that i have allready sold 2 loads at 100 quid and i reckon that there is at least 4 more left in it. it took me and jim an hour to fill the back of the landy using the splitter.

if only all jobs were this rewarding.:001_smile:

I would say it needs to be free. I pay £39 a tonne but for that its delivered and stacked and roughly the right size for our processor. I dont go out and collect free wood because it would loose me money and be too time consuming.

it was free wood genset

saw dust said he quoted for the job i take that means cut & remove & he knocked fifty quid off because he was going to log the wood

so unless i read it wrong he got paid to cut it down & has 6 tonne to sell (600 quids worth of wood) good job i'd say

I think that it is wortrh pointing out that sawdust is based up in the lakes, which if it is anything like down here, all timber has a value, whereas (and im guessing here) in surrey people have central heating and just want the wood gone from there manicured gardens, seeing it as a burden. It is very difficult to charge to remove timber from tha majority of jobs down here, and in fact on most jobs i dont get to remove any at all.

If your primary job is Tree work then selling firewood is only an added bonus and should be treat as such.

All my firewood sales over the year pay for the servicing of all my vehicles and machines and nothing more
