Large cherry - needs out?

Question

Posted (edited)

Moved into a new house over the summer - nice mature cherry in the garden but lots of dead branches and big splits in the bark and evidence of boring. Fear it's past it's prime and needs to come down in a controlled way (before it comes down in an uncontrolled way!)?

The counter view is that doesn't look like there's anything for it to land on, you could leave that and it'll stand for another 10 years. Seen cherry hang on with implausible amount of decay, lovely habitat for bugs and fungi. Depends really if more branches die back, at the moment it's got quite a few leaves.

In the meantime plant a replacement.

I'd favour this option also

If you do take it down I'd be interested in the timber for processing to be used for food smoking

Where are you based? Ive taken down a few Cherry Trees in my garden lately and the latest Storm has taken down a few more.
