My nephew sent me this, from Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire, no leaves so no point asking.

Odd looking so someone might recognise it.

Is it dead or alive ?

I know what you mean, looks like beetle larval chambers on an elm, but I’m assuming it’s alive, and the colour is not elm like.

Elm is the nearest I can come up with Mick .

Your photo is the galleries and tunnels of a beetle larvae.
