Sick Maple tree

Hi,

 

ive an old Maple tree in my backyard here in Brooklyn NY.  I dearly love this tree. It is not so healthy anymore,  and after being struck by lightening two years ago I had to remove one major trunk and trim it back. I had hoped it would recover but it seems some sort of insect is attacking it trough a limb that had been removed. In the past year the hole has gotten deeper and sawdust is accumulating. Any advice on how to treat it would be greatly appreciated

The tree should what is known as 'compartmentalise' and seal off the wounded area. Many old trees have hollow bits and are fine. Possibly it may have been cut back slightly too far- bit difficult to tell. See how the overall tree is next year..👍
