are the nptc refresher courses compulsory?

You cant be assessed using a chainsaw in the tree if you don’t hold the felling small trees ticket.
If you have the old CS30/31 maintenance/cross cutting/felling then crack on, but if you only have the maintenance/cross cutting part you need to do the felling ticket first.

HSE state:

All chainsaw operators should do regular refresher/update training to ensure they work to industry best practice and maintain their levels of competence. The suggested intervals for refresher training are:

  • occasional users – every two to three years;

  • full-time users – every five years.

This is a suggestion. The best person to talk to is your insurer and what they expect from you so that if an incident did occur they will cover you.
