That's eye wateringly expensive, I wonder what the mark up is.
Ah the old 'software is free'. True enough the markup on raw materials is enormous for a downloadable product but the development cost have to be recovered.

Actually I guess they make enough saws to recover the development costs that way, the price is probably set to discourage homeowners from buying it and being a pain in the backside to support. Better all round for business if you take saw to a dealer.

Id be curious as to the development costs Vs the money/time saved in maintenance etc by having obd.

Received the diagnostic kit today and the username and password is included in the kit, on an official Stihl label. So it's not (or no longer is) just a dealer only login to download. However it's a pretty big setup .exe file, around 950 MB or so.

The version which downloaded was version: 3.16.1 - Build: 3. Following install the program pulled down another database update. It looks like the program periodically checks for database updates. This doesn't require any logins etc.

I've attached the installation instructions, in case anyone wants to see.

Many thanks for posting that info!

Just need to find the same thing now for Husqvarna's CST.

Hi There,

i ve dowloaded the program but i dont have a Stihl bluetooth USB adapter to continue,

please help

This one will do the job. It's the one that I use. It acts as a virtual COM port for the Bluetooth communication:

Industrial Bluetooth Smart Ready 4.0 USB Stick with internal Bluetooth Stack. Certified for Europe, USA, Canada, Japan, Australia and Brazil. Black matte finished polycarbonate...

You will need the drivers, if Windows doesn't install them automatically. The easiest way to install them manually is the setup executable found at this link:

I've attached an image showing the link circled in green.

Just a thought - you do have the MDG-1 unit and the cables?  The Bluetooth dongle doesn't communicate by itself.  Here's a picture of mine and another picture showing the UBT-21 communicating with it (both blue LEDs lit).
