decay detection, weapon of choice?

I have an oportunity to remortgage in may, I am seriously considering investing in decay evaluation tools, i am wondering what you all use and why?

 

Increment cores and fractometer (my prefered choice)

Picus (VERY expensive)

 

I prefer the core and fractometer method as this is such an informative method, it does have some down sides that I am well aware of. however, the other methods have some drastic shortcomings, none of wich are experianced with the core fracto methods.

 

different fungal strategies needing an alternative tool/approach.

 

So what are your views on the evaluation of decay in trees, what methods do you use/recommend on a personal and professional level?

 

and what "wouldnt" you use?

It wouldnt, if the tree had that then it would be coming down pretty quickly! (subject to target area ofcourse)

 

Try convincing clients around here to pay for decay dectection when its generally obvious with the aid of a VTA and a tap with the mallet that the tree is nackered and there going to have to pay for it to come down anyway.

i either use my boot or a long pokey stick from their garden, job done. a stick covered in worms and glupe usually does the job

what is your plan to maximise the potential of owning this kit

 

Offering VTA inspection and reporting to people who need to prove that they have this done on an annual basis, due to the occupiers liabilities. its an issue that has come up via a contact and I can see a niche for me to fill.

we use picus, but i was really impressed with the idea of thermal imaging, being able to asses the ENTIRE tree for deformaties rather than just a slither with the picus for example, and the fact the guy i was talking too (andrew mcgowan??) said you could survey hundreds of trees a day rather than a maximum of a dozen with picus battery life/time taken to survey has got to be a consideration.

 

also he said allong with assessing the whole tree, you can scan for bats too
