Have an idea making a geodome for the garden out of some hazel rods

 

Only hassle is working out a way to make the joints. Seen ones made like this:

 

What gauge metal tubing etc so  a bench vice squash the ends ?

 

 

Other option is mdpe pipe?

 

Think 32mm size would suit as internal diameter is 26mm

The few times I've built stuff from hazel, I wove the structures out of the hazel, no metal involved

2.5mm wall thickness.....

That would be a real pain. You're better off using something like 0.6-1mm stainless steel tube like the hydraulic pipe. Won't rust, easy ish to crush, high strength

The ID of 27mm suits hazel but the wall thickness is 2.5mm

 

Stainless sounds pricey need about 12 metres

 

 

 

 

 

Here inn the US  they are using the  emt stuff but its wall thickness is 1.25mm

Any cheaper stuff with thinner wall around with same ID?

Used to make a lot of these. Mostly with mdpe pipe. It's easy. Can also use 22mm copper.
I used a tennoner like a big pencil sharpener to trim the end of the wood to fit the pipe. Then a small screw through pipe into wood to secure it

I think 12M in whatever you go for is going to be pricey, even if you went for plumbing copper which is the only thing that i can think of that isn't going to crack when you crush it. That mild steel pipe is hard as hell and unless you have an oxy torch you don't stand a chance!

Shame nothing like  that EMT stuff the yanks have in uk?

 

The gedome i saw had galvinzed metal tubbing of some kind but maybe they used a hydraulic press?

 

Yeah other option was 32mm mpde black pipe but the boling it in oil bit made me apprehensive is it pretty straight forward?

22mm  is abit thin for the hazel diameters i have

 

Also wanted it easy to erect dismantle so some way of securing the rods in the hubs that is fast. One i saw had poly cord attached  to the rod ends but can't rember how that secured them to the hubs.
