yep roots had girdled ,there was ganoderma brackets around the direction of fall....the top was perfectly healthy though

good example of planting to deep,although i think some soil had been piled around the base in the last ten years

Combination of both guarenteed failiure I guess. Neither would effect the crown. The gradient change would not help much either

theres a whole avenue of them!

problem is the bloke who owned them had some funny ideas.

we planted a few woods for him 5 years ago and he planted grass straight under the whips!evan though he was advised by us and the commision not too, he loved trees but could not be told what was best for them.

They lost a good percentage of the woodland trees due to the grass competing in the first years he kept paying for replacments and kept putting down grass seed!

no mate i hadnt worked there for 5 years since my old man sold his biz.....the person who took it over has just fallen out with the owner of these trees and refused to do the clear up to the dismay of his foreman who fancied an easy day
