Good morning all. We've just moved house and have a fabulous all tree in the back garden. I've asked three tree surgeons what it is, but none of them seemed to really know, so I thought I'd ask here.

Many thanks in advance for your expertise.

Damien

Thanks Steve. All the pictures I've seen of that tree show it with a pointy top and long spindly branches that stick out sideways. This seems a much rounder and neater shape. Would that be because it is more mature?

Has it been topped before? Can't tell from the pics

Ah, I don't know the answer to that as we've only just inherited it. Is there an easy way to tell, other than climbing up it to look?

It should be obvious enough if you stick your head inside and look up. You'll be able to see any pruning cuts. Only ask as this would change the shape of the tree compared to the pointed examples you mentioned seeing

I love being shot down on these IDs so I'm going to go with a topped Lawsons Cypress ?

Having looked at examples of mature trees via Google I think I agree. There's not much evidence that it has been topped though, looking up through the branches. Mind you, I may not know what I'm looking at ?
