Newbie looking for advice

Looking to get myself some tickets and start on my own what do i need to comply with the law

 

I will first do cs30/31 followed by cs32 and will be looking to work on my own with landrover and trailer and my saws (ms240 14", 025 14", 039 15" and 24" AND MS880 17" AND 36")

 

Just looking for advice to keep me on the right side of the pen pushers.

I find the fact you have an 88 and no certs remarkable!!

 

You must know abit already as you have a few saws, Just do the basics and build it up from there!!

Thats a lot of saws for a man who is starting out.....!! You certainly wont ned any more saws!

PPE if you dont already have it, and some public liability insurance is a good idea although not strictly a legal requirement.

you run a 17" bar on an 880? dodgey?

the 17" bar is for the really hard knotty bits when i am cutting logs it runs a full skip chain with lowered depth stops so takes a decent sized bite and still never bogs down

 

I have been using chainsaws for about 15 years now the 880 i got a couple of years ago as i had some large diameter trunks dropped of for firewood and always fancied one

Whats your work back ground over 15 years pal?? why have you never done the certs??

I have done various things for work over the last 15 years ranging from engineering to taxi driving, running my own garage and selling camping / outdoor gear online - all chainsaw use over those years was personal and never for work other than small favours for friends / family

Have never done the certs as i have never needed to but i thought as i plan on now doing this work as self employed as i have been doing a bit more recently (last 2-3 years) it better to stay the right side of the law once i start properly and start advertising and charging

Do you know much about trees?

 

If not, at least get some good books on tree biology, identification and pruning.

I know a bit - enough to get started just taking on basic felling and clearing jobs i have a couple of books on the shopping list so i can learn the more detailed and complex stuff as i go along before i need it and anything i am not sure about i have a friend who has been doing this line of work for about 20 years that i can if needed call on for advice or help.

 

I dont plan on calling him unless i really need to as he is always so busy it can take him a while to get around to coming for a look at things.

 

I would rather turn down or get someone else to do i job i wasnt 100% certain of than to do it badly and damage a tree through incorrect knowledge.

 

I plan on building a steady turn of work through a quality job and service and would rather not do something than do it badly

 

Does anyone have any experience of Bishop Burton college (15 mins up the road from me) for the cs30/31/32 or should i look slightly further away
