So I managed to get the cylinder off and the piston is well and truly scored, but to the untrained eye I think the cylinder is OK. I take it its the shiny areas that would need cleaning off of the transfer and then gentle rotational rub with 2 stroke oil with fine wet n dry and then thorough clean after.

I did find that one of the bolts attaching the carb was stripped and when sprayed in the carb cleaner can see it leaking out between gaskets, so that may also have some bearing. I will of course check the carbs once rebuilt. Also make sure I use the right fuel ? as I dont really have much of a history of the unit.

try some brick acid from the builders merchants .
