just going to throw this out there, probably get some flak for this but do you think that the higher prices mean that you get people on the courses who really want to be there.i personally have saved my pennies to go on courses and i think that made me keaner to pass the assesment

Maybe, but there is another point in there, those of us who want! to comply will pay the price, but those who don't, won't.

I want to prove my competence, I don't want to be spending £1000's on a continual basis doing it!

Looking back over my records i've spent close to £3500 training myself in 2 years factor in cost of my equipment, which is £3000, loler, £200 a year, I suppose it is tax deductable.

I still lack some tickets, apparently I need a chipper ticket, I wonder waht machine they'll test me on? probably a Timberwolf, but I use 18" Bandits 13" pto Duckers, and 20" Vermeers, these machines will chip you whole! and often require forwarders and winches to feed, The Bandit even has a last chance cable in the hopper in case you go feet first I guess:scared:

Is a half day course really going to make me safer and more competent to use such machines??

So I reckon I need another £2500 worth of training, in 5 years time am I supposed to redo all my tests? how is this even possible.

And like a driving license I doubt I could pass the strict criteria anymore, as I have a few bad habits. But does that make me any less competent?

No. All that happens is that the people who pay for their own assessments will no longer be able to afford to go on the courses. The big companies who can afford to pay will still send employees, who wont care whether they pass or not because someone else is paying.

dont get me wrong, i never said that its a perfect system by any stretch of the imagination, the point i was making was that ive allways saved up for my courses and allways really wanted to be there.it took me a while to work through my tickets but i think that made me a better climber because i was practising between tickets.yes the competance review system needs to be looked at, ie a weeks course that goes over everything(within reason) for say 500 pounds.everyone can afford that

The people that really want to be qualified cant afford to because they have bills to pay etc. Most who are qualified were put through the courses more than those that do it them selfs.

I did book my basic certs last year but cancelled as when i booked suddenly the price got hiked up. beehollox to them then.

Whats to stop them just keep upping the prices nothing. Rememeber these are just certs invalid after 5 years while we dont need them to work i prob wont bother. Unless the prices were reasonable say 400 a cert.

how much was your xbox, nice stereo, big television? im not looking for an argument but if you want to get something then you save up for it.i bet there are plenty of people on here who have saved the cash to pay for their tickets, it just depends how much you want it.

dont get me wrong though im not justifying the cost though as i ponted out earlier

Well an xbox is worth the money period. A cert telling me i know how to start a saw well thats not needed.

While by law you do not require nptc why should i waste money that can be spent on some thing use full like saws etc.

The only important thing is to be insured and since you also do not need nptc why this is my question to you why should i pay thousands on courses i dont need.

it depends in which sector you wish to work in or how you want your buisness to grow,ie for councill contracts they ask to see copies of your tickets.

oh no they don't, and i've done loads of council work, i've done MOD work as well all they look for is insurace, health and safety policies and risk assesments, no big client has ever insisted we have nptc tickets and thats in 15 years.

Lots of people seem to be hood winked into thinking you MUST have nptc tickets, you don't.I wonder where these rumors started,it wasn't the HSE thats for sure!

In priciple I think nptc tickets are a good thing don't get me wrong, my problem is the expence, and the fact that some in the industry will have you think nptc certs are the be and end all of arb training
