Log Deck.

So Ive dropped a fair number of trees on my plot. I muts have about 20 tons of mainly Spruce to Mill up, some a good 25-30". Plus I have a bunch of Cherry, Birch and Beech to Mill as well. 

 

So the plan this week is to build a Log Deck and also try my hand and timber framing, or at least getting to grips with a Chain Mortiser. Having a look at a few pics on-line Ive settled on something like the pic below. I'll incorporate a removable section so I can operate the Mill like in one of the pics.

 

I have 10 x 3m lengths of 8" Pressure Treated Beams, so that kinda dictated my dimensions. So will be 3m x 3m. I dont really see any benefit of making it wider that 3m? 

 

I roughed out a a drawing. My thinking is to have a 250, or 300mm tennon on the legs that will anchor the cross brace and notched rails/beams. Its either a 250mm tennon onm the leg so the Rail is mortised 50% through the notch or 300mm tennon with the Rail thru mortised. Im not sure yet which path to go down? I want to be able to easily dismantle the Log Deck yet have it strong and rigid enough to support a fair few logs.

 

Any advice/critique welcome. 

 

Oh and any idea how to cut a tennon 4" Square thast 250-300mm long?

Did you get the 064 sorted? Done any milling yet?

Sold the 064 on as going to use my 660 or 395, can't have too many saws. No milling yet, no time.

Using the Bandsaw to cut the Tennon Cheeks.

Bit more progress with the log deck. Borrowed a mates chain mortiser and mortised out the cross beams. The Chain Mortiser can only plunge 7 3/4” and I needed 8”. I was lazy so gouged out the last 1/4” with a forstner bit then chiseled the edges out.

Few taps with a 5lb sledge and the legs soon dropped into place.

The morn I’ll get the rails notched and mortised.
