Heat Pumps cant be beaten really they have a CoP of nearly 5, that means for every £1 of electric you put in  you get £5 of heat out.

That's right.  Couple more points I remember, electrolysis produces hydrogen and oxygen from water, but at the plant the oxygen was simply discharged to the atmosphere, wasted.  Also, even without any form of fuel duty and after all the government subsidy the actual fuel cost per mile is significantly higher than petrol or Diesel.  And the car costs three times as much in the first place.

A COP of 5 would be very good but I guess newer models with scroll compressors might do that well. COP is very dependant on the temperature lift you require. A badly insulated house with rads might require high temps so poor COP and properties like this are where the horror stories come from. This page explains it far better than I can
