I think it may be a weak lightning strike if that makes sense, which travelled down a broader section of the stem, killing off the cambium layer and leaving a structural weakness in the stem fibres following its track.

Either that or a Gnome could have pee'd on the root, gnome pee is very acidic and it will have tried to compartment that section off, you can see the healing of the cambium layer in one of the pics

I think you're being a bit presumptious re. gnomes. As we all know elves and trolls can inflict similar damage. Before recommending a gnome control policy you need to ascertain the true culprit as the control measures for these little critters is different.:001_smile:

As an expert on Gnomes they are also very good at ice fishing in extreme weather conditions, don't forget not all gnomes just don't carry fishing rods.

I would also agree it could be elves or trolls but IMO and i'm sure Mozza would agree as we are the experts of all things mystical further investigation is needed. :001_smile:

I did alot of research last night (i watched Shrek) and im quietly confident it is gnomes, As you say the ice fishing this time of year draws them out and being sat in the cold with no hot drink to hand there urine is particularly powerful.

Get your flat cap and your jack russell ready Ian, Its gnome hunting time!!! :001_cool:

I have a spaniel that's a nuisance 'pegging' elves in the wood. If he can't find them then I'll go with your gnome diagnosis. Do you use proprietory gnome detecting apparatus?

When the russell's got one cornered, We use these, They look alot like proton packs the ghost busters use to use. So because of copy write laws, We had to make some modifications, The best modifaction is the fact they run off pure rage, Which is geat for me and Ian as we have that in abundance when hunting gnomes :001_cool:

I also have a spaniel it has been trained in the art of capture of all things mystical, but now and again you get the stubbern ones so out comes the scanners and weaponery. Can't really give out to much info as in the wrong hands our kit is dangerous, If you need any info please look at our website http://www.ivegottomuchtimeonmyhands.co.uk . It's should be working but we have problems with critters now and again.
