fig 8 drawbacks

When I get time I'll try some different setups but even with 10mm on srt, I have some lying about, I still reckon you wouldn't descend at any speed likely to cause injury.

Do that and have some fun! Some 25 years ago I thought it was fun to jump of bridges with just a rope-harness-F8 and descend down as quick as possible. We did pick up some good speed and an adrenaline rush! I also work as an instructor on a rope course, on the "rapell-station" we have to hold on to the tail rope just to help them brake if something happends.

So just take it a bit easy and don't go to high and fast the first time, a glove is also a good thing so you won't burn your breaking hand.

f8's are always my preference. I know i should back them up but never do but i don't feel i need to on a 13mm Ddrt system. I can jump out of a tree & it still be too slow for me...frustratingly so.

When i was training me & a couple of other climbers used to do "The Test of Faith" lol.

Jump out on a f8 on an srt system & let your mate on the ground stop you just short, by holding the tail end. HSE wouldn't have liked it, i know. But we did :001_rolleyes:

Thats sounds like something I can use when I do team-building excersices. At least when there is a bunch of "tough" guys wanting to do something extra.

But I also think the F8 is great! You can use it in so many different configuration and no mechanical parts that can break or soft parts that can melt. You just have to know how to use it safely. But I think I heard someoone saying something like that about chainsaws to...:001_smile:

i use a fig8 when doing long descends out of a tree, you dont really need to backup as on 13mm ropes it drags quite well through the device. When on srt i should backup but just don't let go instead lol

When rock climbing i nearly always backup as on 9.7mm line it goes through quite fast. On small lines like this you can use the small eye of the fig 8 instead for increased friction.
